Using Google Analytics, some interesting conclusion can be drawn on the website that Google tracked during the time period from Oct 1st, 2016 to Oct 31st, 2016.

First, the hour of the day that the store typically produced more revenue than the site average from AdWords campaigns was shown in Figure 1. These hours are 6am, 7-9am, 1pm, and 6pm. For all of the other hours in a day, the revenue generated was less than the average. The fact that there are so few hours that generated a higher than average revenue showed that the revenue generation hours are very concentrated. That is, customers mainly only made their purchases during these few hours and few make purchases during other hours. It showed that customers usually visit the website to make purchases in the morning, during lunch hours, and immediately after work in the afternoon.

If you change the hour of day metric to day of week, you can see from figure 2 that the days of the week with higher than average revenue is Monday and Thursday. This suggests that customers are more likely to concentrate and make purchases on those two days while they do not make the purchase on most other days.

The second observation from Google Analytics is that there are two keywords that were attracting sessions that were actually not generating any revenue at all. Interestingly, for this report, there are no top 10 keywords and there are only 4 keywords in total. Figure 3 showed that the keywords “+Google +merchandise +store” and “Google merchandise” did not generate any revenue at all. This implied that those two keywords may not be attractive to the customers and they do not want to make purchases upon seeing those two keywords. Maybe we should consider rephrasing those two keywords to make them more attractive to the customers so that they will have the incentive to make more purchases.

The third interesting aspect that Google Analytics showed us is that out of all the states in the US, there are some states that has a large audience but has a lower than average performance. We used “sessions” as an indicator of large audience and used “bounce rate” as an indicator for performance. The data is ranked with the largest audience on top. From the right column in figure 4, we can easily see that California, New York, and Washington are the top 3 states that had lower than average bounce rate even though the number of sessions is very high. This phenomena suggests that the customers of those states viewed the page more without really caring about what the content is on the website. This could also be caused by the fact that there is simply more population in those states. However, those populations are not really interested in what the content of the website is. I suggest that we use percentage values to analyze this problem. That is, the number of sessions as a percentage of population should be used to eliminate the possibility that a state with high population could be ranked very high.

Last, but not least, I found the age category interesting because it reveals a conclusion about your will to purchase and your ability to purchase. For the 25-34 age group, they are the ones who are most likely to view the page, and also they are the age group who generated the most sales revenue. For the age group of 18-24, there is a different story here. Even though they are interested in the content of the website, their purchasing power is limited because most of the people that falls into this age category is probably still in school and cannot afford to purchase a lot of things without the help of their parents. For the 35-44 age group, although they should have a higher purchasing power because they have worked more years and have accumulated more money, they are not such so interested in online shopping and therefore their revenue and sessions all declined.

In conclusion, many useful conclusions can be drawn by using the Google Analytics and it will help us to change our website toward a way such that more revenue can be generated.
