Analysis

Heated debates have been brought up about the morality of Fighting in Ice Hockey and people wonder if it is appropriate to allow it to happen or ban it totally with strict rules. It has discussed the problem from many perspectives which include the pleasure of the audiences, the safety of the players, the moral standards in the entire society as well as the application of theoretical approaches. (Ryan & Oscar, 2012)

Due to the fights that happened in the game of hockey, a lot of athletes have terribly suffered some injuries and some of them have even lost their ability to walk for the rest of their lives. As a result, it is important to study the issue about fighting in the hockey game to discuss whether it should be made legal for the athletes to fight while the audiences enjoy the game. Things easily go out of control due to the fact that a lot of fights had happened out of no reasons. For examples, some fights have occurred because of the conflicts between the fighters as well as the fans.

In fact, at the beginning of the article, logical structures have been presented as the serious problem was shown in an objective way at the beginning to allow the readers to understand the problem. A lot of questions have been raised according to the issues.(Ryan & Oscar, 2012)

For example, how people can justify fights in the game of hockey while this issue has been judged according to the professional or international standards. What is more, the rules of the NHL have been mentioned and they are based on the values of the Army of the United States of America so it is said that the members in a team are supposed to do whatever they are required to do by their obligation. Also, they are more rules that require the members to be less selfish and to be more selfless. For examples, they need to follow the rules of dignity which means they have to safeguard the other players’ safety and put the benefits of one’s team and other members before their own benefits so when sacrificing oneself is able to bring the entire team benefits.

It should be noted that fighting is not like those horrible chaos in the field of boxers in ancient time. On the contrary, there are rules of virtue and vices to define whether the fight is legitimate or appropriate in the game, which means that some fights are considered morally correct while on the other hands, other fights should be forbidden. (Ryan & Oscar, 2012)

There is virtue fighting but there are cases in which virtue fighting is being broken. It is reasonable to set up the rules to restrict the behaviors of the team players because it says that when a team member starts a fight when his team is loosing or when the other player in another team committed some bad action towards him, it is considered to be the virtue of fighting being broken.

In fact, this part makes sense because based on the ideas from a reliable source, which said that there are a lot of factors contributing to the fights in the game but most often, there are four types of incidents that have caused the fight to happen. Firstly, it is because the players believe that what the other players in another team has done is aggressive and also it is because the players’ mind and ideas have been impacted by the parents as well as the coaches. Also, a lot of fighters are too young so that they do not have the ability to think logically to understand which fights are encouraged and which fights are with ill intention. (Michael, 2016)

In addition, based on the result of these interviews taken in the researches in Aggression, Violence and Injury in Minor League Ice Hockey: Avenues for Prevention of Injury, another two most common reasons for the fights to happen are because of the aggressive thoughts of the athletes themselves as well as the opinions of the players about the aggressive thoughts from their parents. As a result, it is obvious that most of the causes of the fights in the hockey game are due to the reasons that are against the virtue of fighting. That is a reasonable and convincing point to support the ban of the fighting in the hockey game.

In addition, there is more evidence that proves that the fights in the hockey game should never be made legitimate. For example, when the fighters are asked to talk about their engagement in the aggressive behaviors, it is obvious that their actions belong to the “instrumental and hostile aggression”. It means that their main purpose of fighting is to hurt the other players and to inflict pain on their bodies. (Michael, 2016)

Therefore, their reasons of fighting should never be justified as it goes against the virtue of fighting. It is also mentioned that the coaches and parents tend to have important impact on the athlete’s behaviors and patterns of thinking so they have to understand that when parents insert sense of anxiety on the players, they will eventually cause the players start hostile fighting. Therefore, fighting should be banned in many cases during the hockey game because the fact that the players start to fight is because the fighters are impacted by their parents and coaches to start the hostile act.

Also, the coaches are also able to influence the development and attitudes of the players so that if the coaches have a bad temper or violent nature, he would unconsciously impact the players such as putting the ideas of violent attack in the mind of the players. They will also be able to change the moral judgment of the players by the way they talk and the way they behavior in daily training.

There is better evidence to support the claim of the article about the mentality of hockey players. In fact, it is mentioned that for centuries, the culture of playing hockey has represented the violent nature of men in the society. In fact, a lot of players in the hockey game have been torn between the desire to win and to get the upper hand as well as the basic human nature to obey the rules of human justice. However, hockey game represents the male’s demonstration of their masculinity and courage so that they tend to get their hands on the other players while they are playing games. (Miheala, 2013)

To conclude, in the article The Morality of Fighting in Ice Hockey: Should it Be Banned, the problems of fighting in the hockey game has been discussed from a lot of perspectives including the athlete’s mentality, the environment, the social development and the audience’s reaction to prove that it is important to analyze the violent acts int eh hockey to understand whether it is out of good intention or its intention goes against the virtue. Appropriate evidence has been used to explain the mentality of athletes who are engaged in fighting as well the impact that they might have to start the fights. Therefore, the abolishment of fighting in the hockey game should be considered and protected with strict rules. Although it is controversial because the tradition has lasted for decades, the change should happen because it presents the culture of violent act and most fights start with bad intention as the athletes easily get influenced by their coaches, teammates and parents.
