I remembered that once I goggled ‘near sighted’ on the internet, multiple of information jumped out in front of my eyes. Actually I was just looking for the causing of near sighted, while I found myself both confused in my sight and confuse in my mind, that where was the exact information I really wanted? I believe that you are also quite familiar with the situation that we are likely to find ourselves drowned in the overwhelming in formation sea once we surf the Internet, making us not easy to find useful information, but also not easy to make sure that these information are true and collect.

Therefore I’m here to support the opinion that “Internet is spreading fake news”. As the student in University of New Hampshire, it is quite common for us to be busted by fake news on the internet. The ignorance of existence of fake news on the internet will not only block us from finding the exact things we are looking for, but also cause more damages once we do believe the fake information and make arrangement for the future.

With the rapid development of Internet in recent years, the wide application of Internet all over the world has become quite controversial, with both positive sides and negative sides. According to Sloan et al (2015)there are 25,088 pieces of update on Twitter everyday every second, let alone the new information on the other parts of internet. Not all the information on the internet are true and useful. According to Kruger (2016), more than 69% of information on the internet is fake and useless. There are many reasons for the appearance of so many pieces of fake information every day. Firstly, the booming of information on the internet can be attributed to the emergence of social media, where it is possible for people to update their latest information and communicate with each other, like Facebook, Twitter, and MSN. Different from the ways people get aware of information in old times which are mainly through printed and serious newspaper priced on a weekly and monthly basis, people nowadays get their information just from the updating of friends’ Twitters and Facebook. Information conveyed in traditional ways is not enough for current need for information feeding demand in contemporary society, therefore it is an irresistible trend for people to attach on twinkling screens showing updating information. Secondly, another reason of quick and wide spreading of fake news is the temptation of various interests (Ryan, 2010). These reasons can include the need to attract more attentions from the public, the need to increasing financial incomes in some companies and the need to influence results of political election. Thirdly, the reasons for the appearance of numerous pieces of fake information can be caused by the lack of sense of responsibility. The responsibility and cost for users to produce, upload and spread fake news are quite low. Warned by some serious results caused by the fact of fake news spreading, regulations and legislations were in its way of establishing. However, it is still quite easy for Internet users to type and upload whatever shocking news and information they want, under a loose legal environment.

With the rapid development of Internet, human life is becoming more and more colorful and interesting. According to Davidow (2011)the application of Internet in many fields have brought us much convenience. For example, the Internets application in e-business has made it possible to buy nearly everything on Alibaba and eBay. The Internet’s application in finance has made it possible for customers to conduct investment and borrow money from an online base, without the need to close the deal face to face. The application of Internet in social networking has made it possible to communicate with friends and families on an immediate base and made it possible to make friends from a long distance. The application of Internet in the field of journalism and communication has made it possible for people to be informed the exact moment something special happened. And the internet’s application in the field of academics has made it possible for scholars to share the fruit of human wisdom all over the world. Besides, the internet’s application in the field of social communication would not only make people’s relationship closer, but also provide a platform for the sharing of experience and information.

Despite the convenience brought by the development of Internet, it is Internet that has caused various troubles for human’s life. The application of Internet in business had made it easier for businessmen to counterfeit by sending consumers fake and shoddy products instead of the products shown on their Internet shops. The application of Internet in the field of finance has made it hard to run due diligent on every investment transaction. The application of Internet in social networking has made it hard for people to tell the authenticity of the person’s information who spoke to you on the other side of the chart box. The application of Internet in the field of journalism and communication has made it confusing for people to tell the difference between true news and fake news. In summary, the negative effects brought by internet, can be classified into three kinds. Firstly, it is the Internet bias that confuses people’s opinions. Secondly, the negative effects may come from various choices provided by the Internet. The more choice people have, the more unhappy people are. Despite the fact that people want more choice, the more choice people have, the more people are likely to be unhappy. At last, it is the existence of fake news that makes the biggest trouble when surfing the Internet (Klotz, 2004).

At the time when Internet was firstly invented, all the information spread on the Internet was likely to be true, because of its limitation in academic and military field and its limited amount. However, along with more applicable fields of Internet, fakes news are becoming more and more common on the Internet, making Internet the representation for fake news at a time. There are always two kinds of fake news, the one in the field of entertainment and sports, and the one in the field of politics.

As for the fake news in the field of entertainment and sports, there are many reasons for its happening. Firstly, it comes from the needs to attract eyeballs. According to Burden (2008)it is the field of journalism and communication that has the highest possibility of the appearance of fake news. Because of the fact that it is becoming harder and harder for journalists to get the attention of audience, they begin to think about special tricks to attract eyeballs, like the making up of misleading or even false stories about celebrities, political events, business, accidents and crimes. For example, there used to be a video about a plane crash in Abbottabad, which was turned out to be totally faked by careful research on the weather and topography.

Although some pieces of news are entirely faked from headings to the whole contents, some of the news are partly faked, or called misleading in this heading, for the attraction of more clicks. For example, articles with heading of “British guy dies after selfie gone wrong” and “Teenage girl tricked boyfriend into killing himself” are likely to induce you to visit the website of a book store named The Wild Detectives. This kind of fake news is not faked in its content, but faked in its connection from heading link to what you want to see and what you are offered to see actually. Influenced by this kind of fake news, it would likely for me to spend more time in the process of finding what exactly they want.

Another kind of fake news comes from harmful or harmless tricks. For example, the news of FIFA’s grouping information in 2013WorldCup—a misunderstanding of potential grouping policy, which would greatly influence the wining probability of each group—reported by a Mexico website, El Deforma, has been turned out to be a trick after being widely spread by multiple serious and traditional media, including Reuters. Despite the original intention of El Deforma is just to tell a joke about the World Cup, and save people from the tension in the waiting process for World Cup grouping information, it did cause great financial damages in the field of World Cup betting, as well as investors’ fortune.

The second type of fake news comes from political industry. The application of fake news in the field of politics is much more serious than the former type, considering its influence on the future of the country. For example, make fake news happened in the process of 2016 US president election, like “Wikileaks Confirms Hillary Sold Weapons to ISIS” by Political Insider and “Trump Gains Supports of Pope” by news robots. News produced by the application of news robots are becoming a more popular way in the field of journalism. News robots would like to produce news according to its advanced analysis of the popularity contemporary new events. This kind of news would not only attract people’s attention but also influence people’s choice over the political issues.

According to the analysis above, I think it is true that Internet is a place full of fake news. It is necessary for students and people to learn to differentiate true news from fake news. As for students in UNH, there are three suggestions for students to keep in mind, in order to tell the difference between fake news and true news. Firstly, it is recommended for students to apply Sonpes for the differentiation of fake news and true news. Sonpes is a website that tell the difference between fake news and true news by the application of advanced data analysis and cross comparison. The application of Sonpes would increase the efficiency as well as accuracy for students to do their judgment much quicker. Secondly, it is recommended for students for students to double check the source of information before their re-share on the internet, to guarantee the accuracy of whatever you shared. According to Papsdorf (2015), 6 in 10 students would not read what they share on the internet at all, causing a spread of fake news. At last, more information should be collected in the process of judge whether the opinion is true or fake, by the reference with many other media channel.

In conclusion, it is true that the Internet is spreading fake news. Despite the fact that Internet has brought a lot of benefits and convenience into our life, Internet also brings us some negative effects, among which the spread of fake news is the most server. To better take advantage of the Internet, it is necessary for people to establish a sense of judgment, in order to tell the true and useful news from the fake ones by refereeing to other sources and a second thought about whether the news is true. Protected by a good judgment, people can enjoy the benefits brought by Internet instead of being hurt by fake news on the Internet.
