Luxury goods are usually characterized by a rich artistic content, craftsmen meticulously crafted and the brand itself (Burnette, 2008). Internationally recognized "luxury" includes high-end clothing, jewelry, luxury yachts, private jets and so on (Burnette, 2008).

In the 21st century, luxury consumption in China, Russia, India, Brazil and other emerging markets will grow rapidly and they become major growth areas for the world luxury industry (Wong, 2013). In the 1930s, Shanghai, as the biggest international city in the Far East Area, formed a prototype of luxury consumption in China (Kwek and Lee,2013).

After a pause of nearly half a century, after the reform and opening up, luxury consumption returned to China. China's economic takeoff actively attracted large numbers of foreign luxury brands to enter into the Chinese market and further accelerated the development and growth of China's luxury market.

Chinese market has become the favorite of the world's biggest luxury brands. With the enhancement of economic activity in the Asia-Pacific region, the Asia-Pacific market, especially Chinese market is becoming a global strategic area for many luxury groups and brands. In 2011, Greater China Area contributed 23% of sales to the world's leading luxury brands, which not included extra-territorial tourism consumption (Lim, 2008).

China as the representative of emerging economies plays a role that rescues the European luxury goods industry. In 2012, due to the restriction policy on consumption of public funds on three major private purposes: cars, banquets and oversea visits, Chinese domestic luxury consumption slowed down (Kwek and Lee, 2013).

With the rapid rise of China's future middle class and the release of consumption potential in China's second and third class city, as well as the increase of number of young people as the main consumers of luxury goods, China's luxury consumer market is expected to continue strong growth.
