Nowadays, internet becomes an indispensable part of people’s life. The various social networking also played an important role in the daily communications. People, especially young people, use social networking a lot. According to Suren Ramasubbu, 75 percent of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites.” The use of the internet makes the communication more convenient and quick. However, it may also cause negative influence in people’s daily life. The Characteristics as one of new media determine that it might cause unnecessary emotions, uncontrollability of information and bring false satisfaction to people.

Social networking causes unnecessary emotions and stress while it consumes a lot of time in people’s daily life. According to Lauren Davidson: “The average person has five social media accounts and spends around 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these networks every day, accounting for 28pc of the total time spent on the internet.” People spend a lot of time in using social networking to communicate with others or browsing their status. However, since social networking could be considered as one of new media, sometimes the information and news could be passed and propagated quicker than people expected and cause unnecessary emotions. Daily Mail points out in an article that the information about the deleterious effect of the high-fructose corn syrup, which was once spread widely in social media, causes many parents to feel worried about what they fed their child with. However, the experts verify that all this information is one-sided and misunderstood. Daily Mail claims that: “those who fear it the most are deriving the majority of their nutrition knowledge from online newsfeeds.” Actually, many websites and accounts posted prejudiced and misguided information on the internet to attract attention. On the contrary, the reliable and comprehensive information which is provided by the experts to clarify facts, usually could not speared as fast as the false information does. Normal people who lack specialized knowledge and discriminability in certain areas easily might feel worried about it. The unnecessary fear and nervous arise mostly from this situation.

The characteristics of social networking as a new media make it is hard to control. Different from traditional media, such as newspaper and television station, which has strict inspection to make sure the reliability, there are various information and news posted on the internet every day since it has no barrier for anyone to entre and use. The uncontrollability of the social media is caused by this characteristic. People never know how fast the information will spread on the internet. Sometimes, it even might cause people get in troubles. In 2008, Prita Mulyasari, an Indonesian woman, got in trouble with a complex case. She sent an email to a group of friends to complain about the doctors and nurses in a local hospital who treated her with terrible attitude. Her purpose is only reminding her friends not to go to this hospital. Nobody could ever expect how serious it would become. One of her friends posted this email on social media. The amount of read and commons was unpredictable. A month later, the hospital demanded her to pay a huge amount of money for clarification on newspaper and to compensate the economic lost for the hospital. According to Inside Indonesia, “Owing to a new and controversial 2009 law… new electronic based defamation offences are punishable by a maximum fine of Rp.1 billion (A$123 000), as well as a maximum of six years’ imprisonment.” Mulyasari, a young middle-class mother, was accused of a serious crime and large amount of fine just because of an email she sent to friends. The characteristics of new media, such as the uncontrollability and the quickness of spread, are the reasons why this disappointing trouble happened to Prita Mulyasari. Once the information was posted and attracted attention, it is impossible to stop its propagation even if the litigant would like to. Rumors and false information also might appear during the propagation. Prita Mulyasari’s case experienced a long time of trail. During this period, people spontaneously organized campaigns to support her on Facebook. In 2009, Mulyasari was finally confirmed as acquittal. However, she is not the only one who got in this kind of trouble. Many simple things and reckless commons are surprisingly involved in serious trouble. Finally, people might have to pay a heavy price for their inadvertently comments on the internet social networking, or endure the harm alone.

Relying on internet could also bring people false satisfaction, which might have negative influence on their real life. As what mentioned in the beginning, the social networking plays an important role in people’s daily life. People spend a lot of time in watching what their friends post on Facebook and Twitter. However, those people mostly are not their close friends in the real life. As Malcolm Gladwell said in the article “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted”, “they seem to believe a Facebook friend as same as a real friend.” Gladwell believes that the friends in Facebook won’t have any help in the real life, or even won’t have any intersection. Therefore, the only effect the social networking brings is to satisfy people’s social needs and curiosity. Commenting and browsing what other person, who you might know less about, show you their daily life. This could make people feel satisfied, and even might make them felt they have many positive and healthy relationships with others. Therefore, they might won’t treat the relationships more seriously and ignore to have communication with friends face-to-face. If this situation continues, the convenience that the social networking brings us will only ruin relationships. Another reason why social networking is so popular is that people can only post the things they would like their friends know. This could build a relationship which looks like ideal and perfect. But in fact, the shortcomings and weakness are mostly known in face-to-face communications and it is necessary for people to build further relationship with others. One-sided understanding of people could only make the distance farther.

Moreover, since there is no barrier for anyone to post things, social networking could also satisfy people’s desire to speak and share their opinions. However, it also caused the mass spread of some shocking untruth. As the article in Daily Mail pointed out, “One thing to keep in mind is part of the reason is that they want people to think they are just as sensitive and politically savvy or whatever.” As a result, they might ignore to verify whether it is reliable. It could also explain why the false information always spreads faster than people’s expectation. When people could be no or less responsible for their actions and comments, they might pay less attention to the authenticity.

Although the negative influence of the internet social networking should be noticed, many people believe that as new media, it still needs time to be completed and improved. Vicky Beeching emphasizes that: “we need to remember that social media is in its infancy. It’s so young. Twitter has turned 7, YouTube has turned 8. We’re literally taking baby steps. So we can’t panic and say it’s out of control.” The whole internet industry is still immature. People are trying to fill the blank of it, including both the technology side and the law, in order to protect the users and make it even more convenient. Prita Mulyasari’s case facilitated Indonesia to complete the law of new electronic defamation offences, and similarly facing the negative influence of the internet social networking could help people to improve it. Vicky Beeching is confident about the future of social media, she points out that: “we need to remember that all technology, whether it’s the invention of the wheel, the printing press or the internet: they’re neutral tools, they’re in our hands and if they’re out of control it’s simply a sign that we’re out of control.”

The Internet social networking causes negative influence to people’s daily life while it makes the communication easier. This does not mean that the social networking could only ruin our life. Understanding the negative sides of it could help people use it more efficiently and avoid unpredictable harm. As one of new media, social networking still has a long way to further completion and development.
