Introduction

Anna Pavlova is very famous in the dance world, she made the great contributions to spreading and popularizing the ballet art and dance all over the world, her supernormal artistic charm influenced the destiny of many famous dancers in the later generations. This essay firstly make a introduction briefly on Anna Pavlova, and then describes her professional career, moving to the third point, the essay concludes her artistic legacy to the world,so as to help people know her great experience on the dance world.

Early Life

Anna Pavlova was a superstar of the ballet world in the early 20th century and made the invaluable contributions to the ballet. Pavlova was born in Petersburg in 1882. Because of premature birth for two months, Anna as newborn was very thin and small. Anna’s mother was a washerwoman, and her father died when she was two years old. After watching the performance of Sleeping Beauty when she was eight years old, she was determined to be a ballerina. When she was ten years old, she entered Royal Ballet School. When Anna was nine years old, Anna’s mother took her to watch the performance of Sleeping Beauty. This ballet performance thoroughly changed Anna’s life (Snyder & J, Morstad,2015). Then Anna determined that she would dance on the stage someday. Afterwards Anna started to study the ballet and quickly entered Royal Ballet School for further study. When she was fourteen years old, she performed The Wayward Daughter together with Fokine. In her school-days, her classic dance steps and acting talent were very remarkable. After graduating, she always acted as a leading role and successively performed such ballets as Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote.

As a matter of fact, Anna did not meet the requirements on appearance characters of ballet dancer. She is only five feet tall and is delicate and fine so she was different from the most of her classmates. Anna is very strong and holds the perfect balance. Moreover, Anna possesses many unique geniuses. Therefore, she quickly became a ballet dancer. After graduating from Imperial Dance School, Anna Pavlova entered Ballet Troupe of Mariinskiy Theatre in 1899. She acted as several roles in the classic ballets including The Nutcracker, The Little Humpbacked Horse, Raymonda, La Bayadere, Giselle, etc. In 1906, she became leading dancer of Troupe. Anna Pavlova is called “New Breath of Russian Ballet”. The most attractive part in her dance is unique personality instead of excellent skill. Her dance is the dance with emotion and soul.

As Pavlova’s most successful masterpiece, The Death of The Swan spreads all over the world and blinks with the everlasting splendor. In 1907, Anna Pavlova, in the charity concert of Mariinskiy Theatre, for the first time, performed the micro ballet – The Death of The Swan specially created by the ballet choreographer Fokine for her. Since then, this ballet became one of the ballet masterpieces in Russia in the 20th century.. his work becomes a symbol of new Russian dance. Fokine wrote that “The Swan” by Pavlova was proof that dance can and should be not only pleasing to the eye; it must penetrate the soul (http://viola.bz/soul-of-dance-anna-pavlova/). It actually proves that the dance is not only the watchable art but also the art from eye to soul. Compared with Anna’s dance, other parts of the present stage performance are not the original form of Anna’s dance except for the appearance in which the dancer acting as swan give the back to the audiences and open out the wings in the form of wave and the end. The later dancers, according to their own understandings and strong points, constantly give the new meanings and acting methods to the works. However, only Pavlova’s delicate, feminine and sad expression is the optimal way for acting as “swan” (Levine, 1995). In 1909, after Pavlova struck a pose on the stage in the “Russian Performance Season” of Paris for the first time, her performance made a stir in Paris even in the world. In 1910, she organized her own small-scale ballet troupe, and this troupe gave the touring performances all over the world. In the touring performances for twenty years, she arrived in 44 countries including China, Egypt, South Africa, Uruguay, Chile, Canada, Australia, Sweden, etc., the journey was 500000 miles, there were thousands of performances, and the audiences were countless. She wore out 2000 pairs of toe shoes every year. It is unthinkable nowadays when the vehicles are developed.

Professional Career

The dance deeply affected Anna’s whole life. She prepared for the next dance till she passed away. At one time, a critic analyzed her recipe for success: “She made the training and rehearsal all the time.” Even if she won the laurels, she kept making progress. Therefore, Pavlova was also called “Queen of Ballet”.

At that time when she danced, Russian ballet not only inherited the great tradition established by Papiki and Ivanov in the 19th century but also took Fokine’s creation activities as symbol. Therefore, it entered the new change period after Diaghliev’s “Russian Performance Season” reached the glorious peak. By virtue of these factors, Anna Pavlova not only firmly rooted in the fertile soil of classic ballet but also actively supported and took part in the new ballet reform movement. Therefore, these factors resulted in her artistic feature and performance style. The figure created by her is natural and simple, and her action is lightsome and elegant and poetic; her performance has the extraordinary temperament and vivid appeal. The formation of her unique artistic feature and performance style results from all kinds of factors. She had the superb talent and tempered herself by acting the leading role in the traditional dramas at the stage of Russia. The works from Fokine, et al had the great influence on the formation of her artistic feature. Pavlova not only firmly rooted in the fertile soil of classic ballet but also actively supported and took part in the new ballet reform movement. Therefore, these factors resulted in her artistic feature and performance style. Her performance is vivid and lifelike; her artistic style is rigorous, serious and meticulous.

Anna set up her own ballet troupe. In the touring performances, she introduced her ballet with the classic style to the whole world. Anna visited some countries, her journey by boat and train exceeded 500000 miles, and her performances exceeded 40000 times. No matter where Anna Pavlova went, she received a warm welcome and widespread praise. In her life, Pavlova’s name had become a legend. Anna set up a huge ballet audience group all over the world. In the course of touring performances, Pavlova widely absorbed the worldwide folk dances, which were warmly reflected in her programs, such as dances from Poland, Russia and Mexico. For example, when visiting India and Japan, she carefully studied the local dance skills. In India, she cooperated with Uday Shankar on the spot. Moreover, she compiled these studies to “Oriental Image ”. Pavlova dedicated herself to the ballet art. Because she was central post of Ballet Troupe, the financial support was sole source for existence of Ballet Troupe. Therefore, she appealed to the society widely and publicly for seeking the subsidization, and it is not surprising that her burden was extremely heavy. At the end of her life, her skills were always unstable. However, owing to her unique personality charm, she was acknowledged by a majority of audiences.

Artistic Legacy

Whereas Pavlova was immersed in dance, she has the huge influence on ballet while dance gives great power. In the 19th century, owing to the emergence of outstanding talents including Mary Tarioni, Fanny Elsly, et al, the prime of romantic ballet formed at one time. Unluckily, this situation rapidly changed from flourish to decadence due to the absence of successors. In the western countries, under the atmosphere of pure pursuit of skills, the people almost forgot the real value of dance and were inclined to the formalism without contents. By the contrary proposition and style, Anna established the immortal feats for dance art. Fokine thought that Pavlova was an ideal role-player of his works. Some works were prepared for her, and The Death of The Swan was the most famous masterpiece. Fokine thought that the deep implication of this work was only reflected by the whole body and mind instead of four limbs. It not only gives the visual enjoyment to the people but also inspires the emotion and enriches the imagination. Only in two minutes, by the delicate performance and transcendental dance talent, Pavlova incisively and vividly described the image of a swan struggling in a desperate situation for survival. Thus, The Death of The Swan becomes the most popular drama in the ballet history. The modern ballerina takes the performance of The Death of The Swan as glory because The Death of The Swan contains the true meaning of ballet.

Anna Pavlova made the immeasurable contributions to spreading and popularizing the ballet art all over the world. She promoted the birth and development of ballet in some countries in order that the dying ballet was full of vigor in some countries. Meanwhile, her supernormal artistic charm influenced the destiny of many persons. For example, at the age of 14 years old when Ashton – famous choreographer from the United Kingdom watched Pavlova’s performance in Ecuador, she determined to dedicated herself to this sublime art, and afterwards she became the well-known ballet master.

The vital function of Pavlova art was not its momentary joy to the people, while it made the people change the opinions to the ballet within 25 years in this century. She proves that the ballet not only can become but also should become the form of highest meaning of language. Her dance not only has all kinds of strong points from big dance stars in the 19th century but also is better than their unique styles. Many examples state that lots of modern famous dancers fall in love with the ballet and select this hard and sublime career after watching her performances.

Conclusion

In a word, after the introduction and discussion about the experience in the dance world and how the dance influences Pavlova and the impact Pavlova made on the dance world, it can be concluded Pavlova’s influence on the later generations is very deep, and Pavlova art will be of incalculable value to the dance world.
