Some people may opt for doing something wrong for personal gains or sensual enjoyment without defying laws and regulations, which constitute the judicial basis of a country and contribute to popular consensus on values of integrity. Moral wrongdoings but allowed by laws and policies can be seen everywhere and everyday. We might eat our own words for immediate profits, cheat to wriggle out of punishment, and throw away trash everywhere. All of those behaviors are frowned upon, or even raise the public hackles, but will not, at least in a short time, be held punishable in a legal term.

Plato, a wise philosopher in ancient Greece, however, puts forward the argument that whenever we know what is right we will act on it. It is visible that he places adequate emphasis on the significance of morality, which once functioned as the benchmark of integrity in ancient times, rather than laws, which stand as the foundation for social order.

I am a great believer in the concept of conventional morality that sometimes we knowingly do wrong. As a matter of fact, such “intentional wrongdoings” can happen around the world, involving all races, colors, cultures, religions and languages.

We may take as an example Humphrey Spender, a bisexual documentary photographer, who had an affair with a man (Spender, 2015), even this married man had a good-tempered wife and a cute daughter. It is a universal truth that a father is tasked with loving and supporting his family with his heart and soul. Betrayals in any forms shall be forbidden. Humphrey’ s wife and daughter felt shocked by the unexpected visit made by one of his boyfriends, when he had yet divorced and still had the responsibility of being loyal to his family members. Humphrey hid the fact that he was a homosexual because he was born in 1910 while homosexual acts   remained guilty in England until 1967. The father remained ashamed of his sexuality before his daughter, leaving out the sexual bits when he was talking with this daughter about his past.

This real story can give a full expression of conventional morality, which runs poles apart from Plato’ s claim. Humphrey was an inherent homosexual, who was pressured by social environment and legal bans on homosexuality. As such, he had to violate his sexuality and marry a woman, but still held loving relationships with males. Such act is rather amoral in a modern term for he betrayed his wife and delivered a blow to his family. And such behavior was even illegal at that time since homosexuals were likely to be put into jail for sodomy. Humphrey, however, failed to split up with his boyfriends and kept a loving relationship with them, even at a risk of being imprisoned. What prompted his boldness and threatened to ruin his life was his illegitimate sexuality that encouraged him to defy moral ethics and legal integrity, even he understood that his behavior was definitely wrong and could not be forgiven by his children and wife.

This example clearly illustrates that man can commit wrongdoings even he knows how amoral and illegal they are. In this sense, knowledge can be a better explanation for moral wrongdoings than ignorance. That is because man is prone to follow his deep-seated nature and cannot help doing something wrong. It is understandable yet not moral. It is fair to say that Plato overevaluated the power of human willingness and values of integrity, and this might be traced to historical causes. However, time flashes by and we are living in a totally different world. The power of sense of integrity has been going downhill. It is natural to see that people wittingly do something bad. It is obvious to be seen that people are gaining a stronger thinking on right and wrong as our legal system is being improved day by day, and this means nothing has come along that would compromise our capability of judging on good and bad.
