In the Olympic sculpture park stands a monumental head called Echo after a mountain nymph from Greek mythology. This 46-foot-tall sculpture is finished in 2014 and made by Jaume Plensa, an award-winning Spanish artist. I will detail this work from three perspectives: the sculpture itself and its interaction with the surrounding environment, the artist’s course and style of creation, and attitudes of different people towards it.

For the Olympic sculpture park, Echo serves as a landmark that strengthens its geological and cultural advantages. With a well-chosen location, the head appears by a waterfront path which, just as what Jaume Plensa said in excitement in an interview, creates “a great coincidence” by its directly “facing the Mount Olympic” [1]. This permanent sculpture reminds people of the ancient fairy tale that the nymph was deprived of speech as a punishment for her engaging the goddess Hera in conversation and stopping her from spying on Zeus’ affairs. Such association contributes to the occurrence of continuance when viewers lead their eyes through Echo to the Mount Olympics afar. However, for lookers more visually-inclined and less literary, it is stronger perceivable the second principle of design: contrast in color and/or shape. Workers in the park may regard it as “weird” or “odd”, because “all the other sculptures fit in, they’re a similar size; with this size, it (Echo) sticks out.” [2] In terms of color, Echo becomes sparkling white especially when the sun sheds on it, which is praised by Denise Bisio as “dramatic against the blue sky” [2].

So, is this work of art a unique one or just one of the many similar products of the creator? If we have a general look at Jaume Plensa’s productions and the awards he has won, it is easily seen that Echo belongs to the slew of figurative sculptures that Plensa devotes himself to, and is created in the mature period of his output. Before the year of 2014, Plensa has already received numerous national and international distinctions, including the Medaille de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, in 1993, and the Government of Catalonia’s National Prize for Fine Art in 1997 [3]. During decades of creation, the artist has figured out his own style, forming a significant part of work in the field of sculpture in the public space. His widely accepted works convey a sense of transparency and blankness: no matter made of fiber glasses with marble coating (Echo, 2014), stainless steel (Storm, 2013) or cast iron (Lauron, 2013), most of his products emphasize on the purity of color or single texture. This should be our focus of attention in reviewing his works.

In addition, as what I have learned in this quality course, artists use emphasis to attract the lookers’ eyes to, and make them linger on, a place of special importance in an artwork. Echo is “a little bland” and needs “a touch of paint” according to some of the public, but instead “has sort of a peaceful feeling” for others [2]. The reason why there are mixed reviews among ordinary people is that the purity of color and texture creates different focal points or emphases. Echo is more a contrastive, concrete image subject to daily visiting of motley folks than targeted at a mature niche market where most viewers share similar backgrounds or artistic appreciation. This feature renders Echo controversial. It is not known Plensa’s attitudes towards the mixture of reviews, yet he does receives almost consistent praise from art critics. According to Brooke Kamin Rapaport, a curator and advisor for the Madison Square Conservancy’s art program, “When we think of great modern and contemporary public art, usually we think of work that uses an abstract visual language, but Plensa is using an everyday regular person as his source.” [4]
