Write an editorial about the interaction of the cryosphere and the rest of the Earth System. Why is the cryosphere in high latitudes, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere more sensitive to warming than the rest of the globe? Why is this important to the rest of the world?

Cryosphere, a part of the Earth’s crust, is very sensitive towards high temperature. While it occupies large spaces and sizes, it is subject to below 0◦C and it forms the ice components of the Earth (Reading 9B). The cryosphere in high latitudes, especially the Northern Hemisphere, are particularly more sensitive to global warming than the rest of the globe. What is more, the cryosphere’s stability is extremely important to our world. Although some may argue that this is not true, I stand that the existence of the cryosphere needs our immediate attention. 

To begin with, the cryosphere is more sensitive and fragile to climate change in the Polar Regions. This is because the cryosphere is particularly confined to the Polar Regions, where the temperature is extremely low (Reading 9B). With all those ice and snow in the Polar Regions, any temperature change would immediately be reflected on the form of the cryosphere. The cryosphere mediates between the land and ocean where many factors can affect its stability: heat, moisture, albedo, and salinity (Reading 9B). With the Northern Hemisphere having more continent and most of the world’s countries, there are much more factories and population that emit CO2 and other heat-trapping gases, causing the rise of temperature. Therefore the cryosphere in Northern Hemisphere becomes very sensitive than the rest of the globe.

What is more, the cryosphere is also very sensitive to feedback loops, for it not only respond to climate change, but also act on climate in return (EarthLabs).  Studies have shown that the melting of sea ice can affect winter weather in lower latitudes, such as drought in southwestern US during summer (EarthLabs). While the ice reservoirs’ volume relies on the balance of snow accumulation and ice melting, any change in the feedback loops such as global warming would break such balance and lead to one-sided results (Reading 9B). 

Finally, the cryosphere plays a vital role in the globe’s water resource, which includes river flow, sea level variation, and our water reservation. More than a billion people on earth depend on fresh water from glaciers, ice sheets, and other part of the cryophere for life, agriculture and industrial purposes (Reading 9B). The melting of the cryosphere also lead to rise of sea level and it could cause serious disasters if not taken care of. That is why I say that the cryosphere under global warming would be so important to the rest of the world. 

Some may argue that the change of cryosphere is normal since the Earth’s spin has certain level of tilt during centuries, and that melting ice and snow is a natural result of the adaptation. There are data that reveals the Arctic ice usually decrease by 3% per decade while the Antarctic ice increase by 0.8% per decade (Reading 9B).  Therefore it might seem that the change is normal under the assumption that Earth's climate goes through natural cycles. However, these people have ignored the fact that the ice in Polar Regions has been melting at a faster speed in recent years. From 1978 to 2005, the extent of Arctic sea ice has declined for more than 8% per decade, which is 5% higher than usual. There is also plenty of evidence above that shows the change of cryosphere is not accidental but result from global warming. 

In conclusion, we need to pay attention to the long term climate change, especially the sensitive cryosphere change in polar areas. The impacts on our life and ecosystem cannot be overemphasized and we shall develop means and systematic solutions towards such change.
