In this study, the authors investigate what causes and is caused by game addiction. They propose eleven factors to testify the relationship between them, and also apply the study method of correlation and the study model of structural equation. 159 undergraduates, the majority of whom do not live with their parents, take part in the study. These students can also spend their time without the supervision of their parents. The data is collected through these participants’ finishing a questionnaire in Google Docs which is available for more than a month time.

People often think game addicts are usually young males, but on the contrary, they are mainly well-educated persons with good socio-economic condition who have got undergraduate degrees or are going to get them. This good socio-economic condition provides them purchasing capabilities to afford the games.

Sahin and Tugrul find that if players own computers, they are more easily to get addicted to computer games. Furthermore, game addicts are also likely to get addicted to Internet as with some online games.

As for the gender difference, men are easier to be attracted by computer games than women, especially for those adolescent and young males. Their playing of video games may even cause problems. Games are often very hot topics for boy students in their conversation. Men are more addicted to computer games for the design of the game that it may be not so appealing to women. For example, the game is often full of violence and competitiveness.

Employed mothers are more likely to have addictive children. The possible reason is that employed mothers have less time to supervise and monitor their kids to play computer games. A large number of addicts even stay in the internet cafes more than in school.

It is debatable whether the level of education of mothers has an effect on children’s game addiction or not. Some studies prove that the higher the mother’s educational level, the more addictive the child is to computer games , while others do not prove any relation between them.

People play computer games for entertainment and excitement and this can explain the reason why games can attract so many addicts that some players even spend over 6 hours a day in games, the amount of time which is exactly for leisure and relax. Too much time spent on the games triggers the result of addiction but may not problematic behavior.

Addiction of school boys to video games may associate with daily stress like poor school performance, deficient relax time for other activities like dates with friends. Smoking is a debatable element for game addiction.

Students who are addictive to video games tend to have poor academic achievement at school, especially for those who regard it as entertainment and spend a large amount of time on it, but other studies show that there may no such correlation. Furthermore, complex games even help people in spatial and navigational learning and cognitive processing, which will on the other hand benefit students in school performance.

It is suggested that personal feelings will affect the use of the Internet while as for the cause of computer game addiction, individual differences should also be concerned. Internet addicts often cannot control their behavior in using the Internet, and such behavior is often the result of lack of confidence or emotional problems. Besides, people’s psychological reactions to the Internet is also very meaningful to understand the addictive behavior. The choice of the Internet also has close relation with one’s psychological and social characteristics. Someone may be confident to some degree before they begin to play video games, and then his or her confidence may be both increased or decreased, so psychological features and addiction of the Internet and games is thought to influence each other.

Those who are short of self-confidence, self-esteem and social skills are likely to be Internet addicts, and they consider the games as avoidance and compensation of reality. The excessive use of Internet games is often triggered by the uncomfortable feelings about life, which is even more serious for men. On the contrary, opposite opinions hold that playing games lead to higher self-esteem. It is finished through positive experience in computer games. Players can even have their own identities as they like. In addition, it is easier for introverted persons to communicate with people in games rather than in reality. Achievements in games provide motivation for game players. Excitement and relaxation help relief the tiredness and hardness after a day’s hard work. Even the avatars they choose in the game show their different degrees of high or low self-esteem.

Game addiction mainly comes from online or computer games. School boys coming from families with relatively higher social status tend to be more addictive to games and their school performance, self-esteem and self-confidence are decreased. The negative influence includes SAT, GPA or course scores. However, complex games may lead to better academic performance since its positive impact on cognitive development.

To test the relationships among all these factors requires a correlational research and different from previous studies focused on psychological perspective, this one constructs these factors from socio-psycho perspective.

Compared previous studies, this one pays attention to other possible causes of addiction, including smoking, employment and educational level of the mother. There may also exist other elements concerned with game addiction that can be investigated in the future research.
