To be an excellent early childhood teacher who can stand on the three feet of the podium with a chalk picturing the bright future for each naive and pure face has always been my dream. However, this dream should not be a utopian scheme, but should be tested by the various practices and should be supported by a series of educational theories and researches. Therefore, during those years’ symmetrical study, I not only focused on the professional courses learning, but also paid my attention the education process and practices, which laid me a solid foundation to learn your program of Education.

At first, more than three years’ symmetrical study in America witnessed my growth from a newcomer to a mature person with good adaptive ability, expression ability, time management ability and communication and cooperation ability. Before each class, I always prepared well and searched for more related information independently on the Internet. After class, I would like to communicate them with my professor and classmates. Especially after experiencing the examination week, I even learnt how to manage time so as to maximize learning effect. Besides, I was lucky enough that my high school in America provided me a rich literacy environment, which is conducive to my adaptability to the undergraduate studies in your Education program. Here, benefiting from the open teaching mode and small-class teaching, I had more time to play with what interests me rather than to be asked to go home to finish the homework first just like most of Chinese high school students are experiencing in the test-orientated examination. My teachers often said “great stories not only amuse, but teach”, which enlightened me a lot. They usually selected some interesting related stories first and shared with us in the classroom. Therefore, I always think that if the teaching materials can be presented as the form of stories, it must be very interesting and easy to be accepted by the children.

Inspired by my American education, I wish that one day this kind of comfortable and impressive education concept can trickle down to everyone else.

2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

Just as Mary Lou Cook’s famous saying goes “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun”, I have always believed that the creative life is from the lessons we draw. Once in the research project of Geology to mainly study the relation between stones and the Earth, due to my imitative and good leadership, I was assigned as the group leader who was responsible for the topic selection, personnel arrangement as well as internal communication and cooperation. However, due to wrong arrangement of time and task, our group became the last one that finished the task. We did try our best but failed at last, which made me learn a lot of lessons and aroused me much thinking. Therefore, I re-examined the whole process over and over again.

First of all, I was in too much of a rush to notice the personnel screening process. Only did I consider their research ability and neglected their own personality. For example, I let Jenny, a girl who was good at data statistics to search for the pictures of different stones. Secondly, our team’s aim was not clear so that we focused on structuring an organization to achieve process-driven quality and left the details of how to execute the process up to each member. And our group members were slow to act and lacked a plan. I provided some incentives for them, but it appeared to have little effect. Each member had their own understandings about the group aim. Thirdly, the brainstorm could not help us positively identify causes of problems and I should use it properly. I collected a lot of creative ideas but also lost in them.

Drawing lessons from this failure, I greatly generated a creative idea when I play a role as a leader in other work that is to find a paper and let the group members first write their ideas and opinions about the projects and what kinds of roles they would like to play in the projects and then I will collect them and make the wise decision.

5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

To decide to go to US is the biggest decision I have never made, which witnessed my growth to be an independent one. Due to different education circumstances, different languages, and different cultural backgrounds, the senses of strangeness and foreignness confused me for a long time. In terms of my poor English, I often put myself in a very awkward position. Therefore, I was always carefully to avoid speak too much because I was afraid of being laughed at and being understood. Therefore, I must face this challenge and accept it.

On one hand, I began to practice my English to recite those daily vocabulary and sentence patterns in grammar and find some interesting magazines and books to read. Some English context, units, phonetic symbols, word-building and association and so on, all of them flooded into my world, which also generated my passion towards the foreign culture. On the other hand, I strengthened the connection with my roommates, who were very nice and helpful. They would like to share their life experiences with me and told me how to make a proper expression in English. Gradually, they became an indispensable part of their life and I learned how to communicate with other peers. In the classroom, I also became more active than before, timely put forwards what confused me and talked them with my teachers. Moreover, I even formed my own habit here to keep diaries. When the alarm awoke me every morning, I started cleaning the room and prepared for the whole day’s arrangement. It was the first time for me who had never been away from home alone before to enter a completely new environment. But with the help of my beloved roommates, I seemed to grow up overnight.

Through this experience, I have learned how to build my confidence in a very different environment and how to find a suitable learning method that can make me get twice the result with half the efforts. I can share my experience with more children like me. It will be a great help for my further learning in Education.

7. What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of California?

With the guidance of my aunt, an early childhood teacher in the kindergarten, I once finished the investigation of assessment of children’s writing development and even wrote an informal report, in which I summarized my findings that it is commonly believe that people have always followed the old routine and invariably underestimated the preschool children’s intelligence and speaking ability so that most of the children would fail to reach their full potential and talents and if they were given full play, the effectiveness of creativity education is an amazing breakthrough, during which the children’s writing development, as the major sign of children’s intelligence level, plays an important role that provides the solid foundation for their intelligence development.

Of course, my findings were also supported by my investigation and interviews. Assisting my aunt in finishing materials collections, data arrangement, and comparative analysis, my basic understandings about the early children teaching has been totally changed. Before that, I believed that teachers just played their own role properly and actively, the students could gain more pleasure during the learning process. However, I did ignore many other objective factors, such as education concepts, children’s acceptance degree, different-age characteristics and so on. The deeper I learnt, the more deficiencies I found in my self. Therefore, to decide to apply for your program--Education is the first choice of mine, where I should learn more advanced methods and education theories, which will support me to go further in my career development.

In order to make the investigation more persuasive, I selected three children of different ages to test their basic writing abilities through their daily behaviors and individual interests to complete this questionnaire so that I could come to the conclusion that with increasing age, children’s writing ability is definitely improved and the main reason for this is the great change of writing environment. Through this kind of experience, my writing ability, sum-up ability, observation ability and logical thinking have been improved. I firmly believe that all of those can set me apart from other candidates to get the precious chance to study in the UC.
