Poetry is one of the literary genres since the ancient times, which is significant in the history of literature, though not usually adopted in modern society. The poetries written by Dante, George Gordon Byron, and Shakespeare etc. are still considered as the classic works that no one can go beyond. But it seems that there is no unified definition in terms of what poetry is in the industry. When talking about the poetry, rhythm, and succinct language and emotion expressing are the three main elements distinguished it from other literary genres. Therefore, this essay will try to define poetry as a literary form from the above-mentioned three perspectives.

Rhythm is the most obvious characteristics of poetry. In general, it means that the structures of the paragraphs in poetry are similar and rhymed. For instance, in Hope is the thing with feathers written by Emily Dickinson (1955):

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

In the poet, the last words of the first and third sentences, “heard” and “bird”, the second and fourth sentences, “storm” and “warm”, are rhymed with each other. This kind of rhythm in poetry makes it more harmonious in reading and strengthens its musical beauty. Besides, the sentences in poetry are regular as well. They are mostly with the same or similar quantity of syllables, increased or decreased by degrees in length. In the above example of Hope is the thing with feathers (Dickinson, 1955), the stanza is composed with four lines which are eight syllables in the first line, six syllables in the second line, and eight and six syllables in the third and fourth lines respectively. Rhymed poetry are more catchy and with artistic conceptions.

Another characteristics distinguished poetry from other literary genres is the succinct language adopted with rich meanings. Take the classic haiku written by Matsuo Basho (Haiku: Poetic Form, 2016) for example:

An old pond!

A frog jumps in—

the sound of water.

The above haiku described the moment when a frog jumped into the pond vividly with only eleven words. In the first sentence, the word “old” implies that the surroundings of the pond was silent and with no vitality. After a frog jumped in the pond, “the sound of water” was heard. Although it was not clarified that what was the sound of water like when the frog jumped in, readers can pictured the image as the succinct words leaves them with infinite imaginary space. Basho depicted a dynamic image of a pond being deadly silent and turned into energetic after the entrance of a frog. The beauty and life of nature is implicit in the simple sentences.

The third characteristic of poetry is that it help express the emotions of the poets. The descriptions, including the compliments or criticisms towards a bird, a cloud, a flower etc. are not mentioned from no reasons. They are the poetic images the poets adopting to express their emotions. In Morning Song written by Sylvia Plath (1965) for her baby daughter Fried, her potential concerns towards herself and the world were revealed. Plath's anxiety were shown via saying "I'm no more your mother /Than the cloud" (Plath, 1965). However, she expressed her deep love towards the baby, since "One cry, and I stumble from bed" (Plath, 1965). What's more, "a fat gold watch" (Plath, 1965) in the beginning of the poetry was used as a metaphor of the newly born baby in a light-hearted and cute way, that readers can feel her love to the baby.

To sum up, poetry, though with no confirmed definition in literature, is agreed to have rhymed sentences increasing the musical beauty of the poetry, succinct language expressing rich meanings of the poets, and the function of expressing the emotions of the poets through poetic images.
