Introduction

According to Lambeth city council’s estimation, UK’s food waste number came around 3.5million tones every year, most of them became landfills even before it get sold in the supermarket nor did it served on people’s dinning table, those food which were about 10% of total food wastes were perfectly good to serve as people’s usual meal, because they were mislabeled or package damaged. Other wastes were came from over ordering, those food wastes became landfills, fed to animals or anaerobic digested to provide energy.

The Concept

Serve those who in need of cheaper food, especially fresh vegetables, fruits, deli and meat. And those who lack of transportation to get to nearby retails while there are no supermarkets or grocery stores in the neighborhood area.

Most of current social markets are community shops that operate use membership model only serve those who are on government benefit list and have a maximum membership numbers. Foods sold in the store are at discounted prices because they are mislabeled or near expiration date. It is a convenient way for those who are not in desperation for food at emergence.

This might pushed away those who are also in desperate need but not able to access to government benefit in a short period of time, or those who are also in desperate need but cannot get transportation means to nearby supermarket, or even those who are sick in bed cannot perform grocery shopping themselves. The waste of the surplus food and need can be matched through discounted food shop.

Align with the thought that this Social supermarket concept aim to:

Reduce waste and match those surplus food resources to those need but does not have access to.

Serve communities do not have nearby supermarket.

Connect with local farmers and producers to reduce transportation costs.

Serve following customer group:

Live in a specific area, near by or lived in government indices of deprivation;

Live in a household that receives some form of Government income support or waiting to receive support;

Sick or lack the means of transportation to get groceries.

Revenue model

Major revenue stream will be sales revenue from the shop.

To reduce expenses, beside hire part time stuff member, volunteer also wanted to help run the shop.

To aid those in need of fresh food but lack access to get a job to earn salaries, community shop also considers having them work in the shop during busy period in exchange for money and work experience. There would be some extra cost regarding hire people on temporary short terms and this kind of employment are unpredictable, but might became an aid to those have blank time period on CV because this only provide financial aid but also help those people to get a job to start new life venture.

Also consider the DPO model that used by a community supermarket in US, which can help reduce the financial stress and have more people involved in the community work. There are people who willing to help but not necessarily have the time to do volunteer work, as in the US example it was crowd funded to serve their own community, this model may also able to serve UK community as well.

Competitive environment

Many retailers, brands and manufacturers, including Asda, Morrisons, Co-operative Food, M&S, Tesco, Mondelez, Ocado, Tetley, Young’s and Müller, are supporting this scheme. Other concerns regarding business competition are outlined in the concerns of business operations below.

Benefit and concerns of operating community shop

Benefit:

Serve the community.

Existing needs for such a business venture to provide services to those who are not able to get to fresh, nutritious food because of financial burden or transportation barriers.

City are willing to facilitate and support this kinds of business venture, as Leader of Lambeth Council, Councillor Lib Peck once highlighted that community shop and social market can help to match surplus food to those who in needs, it provides more that just food, it also provide support to those who just need that bit of extra help and make the community a fairer places.

The Make connection with local farmer, if able to get cheaper locally grew fruit and vegetable, this can reduce transportation cost and time, grow local and serve local family.

Concerns:

This is more of a charity venture to provide those who in need of fresh food in the community.

The income are tightly related to the percentage of food able to get sold before expiration dates and cost of merchandises, profit margin of community shop are really small, since most of food are sold at 70% discount in other stores, 1/3 price in regular store.

There are currently over 245 community shops in England, Scotland and Wales and each year 20 or more open for business. Large corporates, charity foundation or churches support existing community shop as a charity to serve the close community, to open a new shop, it is necessary to consider to competitiveness of existing forces and distinguish from them.

Location of the business is crucial, it has to be in the place of the most need, for example where there are insufficient public transportation resources. Cost of renting and renovation would be sunk cost and prevention of shoplifting is also important.

Triple bottom line

Economic – Help those with financial burden; increase the money spend on which before was wasted. Helped people to get back into job forces, making positive economic impact

Environmental – Reduce food wastes and reduce landfills. Buy local food, reduce carbon dioxide footprint.

Social – Provide aid to people in need, serve community.

Quantitative analysis

There are no available financial reports from other social market or community shop, numbers are estimated from Ocado’s 2016 income statement. For analysis purposes, average rent in London will be used for estimation, and other costs would either be percentage of total sales or fixed number.

In concerns of start up founding, a loan of £25,000 with annual interest rate of 6% is used in the figure as well. From the projected income statement, the business would have small positive revenue at the end of second year, the key for business survival would cost control.

Also, UK government also provides assistances and tax relief for small business start-ups, and to open a community shop, resources also available through Plunkett Foundation. Those resources are not included in the projected income statement, with those resources; this business would be more viable and profitable.
