Distinctive from the ordinary films, art cinema uses narrative and strategies that are more subjective and emotionally oriented. This essay will discuss the use of out-of-order narrative, ambiguity, psychological focus, montage as well as black and white strategies in art cinema. Through examples from two classical art films, how these strategies are effective will be illustrated.

The narrative used by most art films are different from the classical narrative mode, such as the cause-effect order (Bordwell, 57). This is also a way of realism since the logics of events are not so visible in reality. A much more subjective and realism narrative is adopted where the plot goes along the psychological activities of the characters, while the logical links become much looser, even unidentifiable in some art cinema. In the film,Breathless from 1960, the director edited the film in a ununiform way with scenes jumping from one to another, shattering a simple story into pieces. This seemingly illogical narrative perfectly reflects the mental state of the characters. This way of editing then became a signature characteristic for many new-wave films. The device of ambiguity is another strategy adopted by art cinema. Again, the ambiguity aligns with reality which demonstrates the realistic nature of art cinema (Bordwell, 60). Multiple themes of the film can be interpreted from different perspectives: criticism of capitalism, the strength and weakness of human nature, the important life choices to make, etc. Each is reflected by certain pieces of the story, yet none is dominant and clearly illustrated, which is another common trait of art cinema.

In terms of content, the theme of most art films is related with the explanation of the psychological states of the characters (Bordwell, 58). Pather Panchali, an Indian film made in 1955, tells the story of a family tragedy in a small village in India. All the characters suffer from the disappointments of reality. The broken literature dream of the father, the poverty and conflicts haunting the mother, the loss of family members all align with the theme of the movie. The use of sound and silence is found an effective way in showing the emotions. When the mother punishes Durga because of the “stealing”, instead of adding in the sound of the painful cries, the movie goes silent and the lens focuses on the facial expressions and body languages of Durga and her mother, which is considerably more effective in conveying their emotions to the audience than the traditional way. The contrast in the settings is another effective strategy. In the stormy night when the mother cared for Durga beside her bed, there were multiple scenes focusing on the hole in the wall, which symbolizes the window to reality. The contrast of the storm outside and the stillness inside amplifies the agony and struggles in both the characters.

Manipulations of story order, such as flashbacks and use of montage are also commonly seen in art cinema (Bordwell, 59). According to the theme to be expressed in the film, montage is the rearrangement and combination of a series of short scenes. The order of scenes in the montage can be of logics, deductive, or simply by the aesthetic inclinations of the directors. In Pather Panchali, the point of view and the montage on the storm, the tress and the reeds was designed beautifully, showing the rich emotions contained in the scenes. The black and white color of the film was due to the limit of technology back then, but it is more and more used in the art cinema in its purity of expressions. Stripping away the colors and distractions, the film becomes effective and intense in creating a world separate from the reality, for the audience to be completely immersed in it. Black and white films put more emphasis on the light used. For example, the bright eyes of the characters in Pather Panchali shows the director’s celebration of humanity.

The way all the strategies combine should always be natural and authentic, instead of clumsy imitations, for them to work. As opposed to ordinary films that create unrealistic worlds, art cinema pushes the boundary of realism further and further. This is because only through the most honest depiction of humans and the world can we find the truths in life. The strategies analyzed serve as common tools of the art cinema to achieve such goals.
